Some Facts :--
- The national electric grid in India has an installed capacity of 360.788 GW as of 31 August 2019.
- Renewable power plants, which also include large hydroelectric plants, constitute 34.86% of India's total installed capacity.
- During the 2018-19 fiscal year, the gross electricity generated by utilities in India was 1,372 TWh and the total electricity generation (utilities and non utilities) in the country was 1,547 TWh.
- The gross electricity consumption in 2018-19 was 1,181 kWh per capita.
Challenges in Electricity Sector :--
- Large gap between demand and supply.
- High losses due to transmission and distribution losses, commercial losses due to theft and improper meter reading.
- Lack of latest technologies like AMR (Auto-meter Reading), smart sensors, smart micro-grids, FACTS devices etc.
- Lack of earthing wiring in rural areas.
- Less focus on electricity generation by renewable sources.
- Quality of power in terms of frequency regulation.
- Inefficient power plants.
- Delays in bill payment, electric meter tampering, lack of awareness for conservation.
- Lack of control and coordination on tariffs by Public Sector Units.
- Inadequate last mile connectivity.
- Coal supply affected by monopoly of Coal India, primitive mining techniques, theft, corruption, poor coal transport infrastructure etc.
