Qi (Chinese Philosophy)

The 2 Sources :
1. Inheritance from parents.
2. Derived from air, food, water.
The 5 Functions :
1. Promoting :--
Provides active, vital energy necessary for growth and development of human body & to perform physiological functions of organs, meridians & tissues. It also promotes formation and circulation of blood and supports metabolism of body fluids.
2. Warming :--
Qi contains heat energy. It warms the body and keeps it at a constant temperature.
3. Defending :--
Qi resists the entry of illness factors in the body and maintains healthy physiological functions.
4. Consolidation and retention function :--
Qi consolidates and retains body's substances and organs by holding everything in its proper place. It retains and adjusts blood, sweat, urine, saliva and sperm secretion.
5. Transforming function :--
The Qi may vaporize substances in body and transform them into essence or vital energy.
The 4 Directions of Movement :
Up, down, outward, inward.
The 4 Types of Qi :
1. Inborn
2. Pectoral
3. Nutritive
4. Protective
The 4 Types of Qi Pathology :
1. Deficient
2. Sinking
3. Stagnant
4. Rebellious
Blood & Qi :
Blood is derived from Qi in 2 ways :--
a) Food
b) Kidney
The 4 aspects of close relationship between blood and Qi are :--
a) Qi generates the blood
b) Qi moves the blood
c) Qi holds the blood
d) Blood nourishes Qi and is more Yin in nature.
Qi & Body fluids :
The 2 types of body fluids are Jin and Ye.
