Challenges of Mental Health Institutions in India

Hello Everyone !!!

The psychiatric and mental health institutions in India are facing following challenges

  1. According to NIMHANS, there are more than 7-cr. mentally ill people in India and less than 4,000 doctors to treat them and most of them concentrated in Metros and 2-tier cities.
  2. We have only 40 institutions and less than 2,600 beds. Of these, only 9 institutions equipped to treat children.
  3. Most of these institutions have medieval-era structures and patients kept in solitary confinement.
  4. Barely 1-2% of Health Budget every year dedicated to mental health problems and related systems.
  5. Most of these institutions are over-crowded and the patients are ill-treated.
