Ghosts in the Chinese Culture

The Chinese mythology too, like mythologies of the rest of the world, has its own fair share of stories and creatures. Some of the supernatural creatures mentioned in the Chinese mythological and folk stories are listed below.


Types of Ghosts :

Classification-I :-- (10 types)

  1. Drought
  2. Goblins
  3. Hungry
  4. Messenger
  5. Nightmare
  6. Pestilence
  7. Servant
  8. Trickster
  9. Venomous
  10. Weird

Classification-II :-- (by Fanyi Minyi-ji)

a) Ghosts without means --
Foul-mouth, needle-mouth, torch-mouth.

b) Ghosts with small means --
Needle-hair, smelly-hair, tamour. 

c) Ghosts with excessive means --
Hoping for offerings, hoping for leavings, powerful ghosts.

Classification-III :--

The wandering ghosts.

Other Facts :
  • According to Hua-yen Sutra, evil souls exists in 6 realms.
  • A soul becomes Hungry ghost due to killing, stealing and sexual misconduct. The 4 factors causing them are desire, greed, anger and ignorance.
