The Cane as a Weapon

This classic and unique American self defense manual was originally written by A.C. Cunningham in 1912. It details a practical and versatile system of self defense using a common walking cane or umbrella. 

1. Holding the Cane :

To hold a cane ready for instant attack or defense, grasp it at a distance about 1/4th or 1/3rd from butt. At least 4-6" of the butt should project from back of the hand.

2. The 9 Kinds and Directions of Blows :

  • Jab
  • Thrust
  • Uppercut
  • Right cut
  • Left cut
  • Down cut
  • Diagonal cut
  • Circular cuts
  • Back hand cuts

3. Points of Attack :

  • The face, head and neck - Primary targets
  • The elbows, knees, shins sensitive to comparatively light blows and may be attacked when exposed.
