Chinese Gung-Fu (by Bruce Lee)

 Hello Everyone !!!

Chinese Gung-fu is a book authored by late martial arts expert and actor Bruce Lee in 1963.

Here I am presenting a summary points from that book.

1. Important Pointers :

a) Cooperate with the opponent. Instead of stopping his force, complete it by following him to destroy him by himself.

b) It is better to learn how to endure, than to learn how to fight. If compelled to oppose force, make use of it.

2. The 7 Stars :

Watch out for opponent's 7 parts :--

Hands, feet, elbows, knees, shoulders, thigh, head.

3. The 3 Fronts :

Take care of one's 3 fronts :--

a) In front of one's eyes

b) In front of one'shands

c) In front of one's legs

4. There are 36 throwing techniques and 72 joint-locks in this system.

5. Gung-fu is for health promotion, cultivation of mind and self-protection. Its philosophy is based on integral parts of the philosophies of Taoism, Ch'an, I-Ching, i.e., to bend slightly and spring -back stranger than before, conservation of energy, moderation, adapt harmoniously to opponent's movements.

6. The Basic Theory of Yin-Yang in Gung-fu :

  • In Yin-Yang circle, black part is Yin. It represents negativeness , female-aspect, Moon, darkness, night etc.
  • Whereas Yang represents positive, active, firm, substantial, male, Sun, brightness, day etc.
  • The "oneness" of Yin/Yang is necessary in life, as well as balance.
  • The application of Yin-Yang theory in Gung-fu is called " Law of Harmony".

7. The 5 Ways in Chinese Martial Arts :

  1. Striking
  2. Kicking
  3. Joint-locks - 72 techniques
  4. Throwing - 36 techniques
  5. Weapons - 18 types.
