Some Historical Facts about Snipers and Marksman

A sniper is a military/ paramilitary marksman who engages targets from positions of concealment or at distances exceeding the target's detection capabilities. Snipers generally have specialized training and are equipped with high-precision rifles and high-magnification optics, and often feed tactical information back to their units or command headquarters.


In addition to long-range and high-grade marksmanship, military snipers are trained in a variety of special operation techniques :-- detection, stalking, target range estimation methods, camouflage, field craft, infiltration, special reconnaissance and observation, surveillance and target acquisition.

Some Facts :

1. A sniper motto-- "He who shoots and run away, lives to shoot another day".

2. There was a sniping school founded at Linghem, France in 1916.

3. According to some records, during US Civil War (1861-65), General Hiram Berdan and Robert Lee were the first sharpshooters at that time.

4. In World War-I (1914-18), the Germans were the first to place specially trained snipers in war.

5. Russia was the first country to use snipers in 2-man teams.

6. Sniping needs skills of constant dedication, patience and mathematical ability. It is a learned skill and requires constant practice.

7. Whitworth rifle (1854), designed by Mr. Joseph Whitworth of Britain,  was the first sniper rifle of the world.
