Here is a list of Japanese dynastic and political periods between 500 and 1500 AD :
- Asuka period (538–710): Known for the introduction of Buddhism and early imperial consolidation under the Yamato clan
- Nara period (710–794): Featured the first permanent capital in Nara and strong Chinese cultural and political influence
- Heian period (794–1185): Dominated by the Fujiwara clan; marked by refined court culture and the rise of the samurai class
- Kamakura period (1185–1333): The first shogunate was established by Minamoto no Yoritomo; saw military rule through the Kamakura shogunate
- Muromachi period (1336–1573): Also called the Ashikaga shogunate; known for feudal strife, the rise of regional lords (daimyos), and cultural developments
Though the emperor remained the symbolic ruler, real political power often shifted to military and aristocratic families.
