Chinese Dynasties of Middle Ages (500-1500 AD)

Here’s a list of major Chinese dynasties that ruled during the Middle Ages (roughly 500–1500 AD), a period marked by fragmentation, reunification, and foreign rule:

1. Sui Dynasty (581–618) – Reunified China and began major infrastructure projects like the Grand Canal  

2. Tang Dynasty (618–907) – Known for cultural flourishing, strong trade networks, and expansion  

3. Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (907–960) – A fragmented era with regional powers vying for control  

4. Song Dynasty (960–1279)  

   - Northern Song (960–1127) – Noted for innovation, governance, and urbanization  

   - Southern Song (1127–1279) – Continued cultural advancement despite military pressure  

5. Liao Dynasty (907–1125) – Khitan-led rule in northern China alongside early Song  

6. Western Xia Dynasty (1038–1227) – Tangut-controlled dynasty in the northwest  

7. Jin Dynasty (1115–1234) – Jurchen-led government that overtook northern Song territories  

8. Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) – Founded by Kublai Khan, representing Mongol rule over China  

9. Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) – A return to Han Chinese rule, known for exploration, art, and defense structures like the Great Wall


This era saw a rich interplay of native and non-Han dynasties, with flourishing arts, trade along the Silk Road, and major developments in science and philosophy.
