Techniques and Use of Police Baton (FBI Manual, 1967)

Types :--

  • The baton is made from hardwood or plastic. It is 1.5" in diameter, rounded at both ends and will vary in length.
  • Short baton/ Billy club -- 12"-18"
  • Medium baton/ Nightstick -- 20"-26"
  • Long baton -- 28"-56"
Methods of Carry & Use :--

  • Carry where it is easily accessible to the strong hand. Many officers prefer to carry it on the same side as their sidearm.
  • Alertness and proper use of the baton insures complete control.
Vital Spots to Strike :--

  • Points of impact -- Above clavicle, shoulder tip, upper arm, elbows, hand, solar plexus, ribs, forearms, pit of stomach, groin, thighs, knees, side of calf, ankle front. shin. toes.
  • Kidney, behind scapula, buttocks, behind knees, thigh, calf, ankle bone, Achilles tendon.
  • Fatal points of impact -- head, throat, neck, armpits, chest cavity.
