The Marvellous Samaranga Sutradhara Text of Ancient India

Samarangana Sutradhara, is an 11th-century poetic treatise on classical Indian architecture (Vastu Shastra) written in Sanskrit language attributed to Paramara King Bhoja of Dhar (1010-1055 CE).

Here are some of the excerpts from the text.

Yantra :

According to King Bhoja, Yantra is that which carries out having controlled the beings moved off wantonly by personal moving path.

Constituent Elements of Yantra :

  • Earth, water, fire, air
  • Ether/ Aether is the medium of action
  • Mercury is a distinct element which by nature is earthly along with earth, water and fire.

The 3 Categories of Yantra :

  1. Automatic, occasional propelling
  2. Hidden motor mechanism
  3. Distinct but can be carried.

The 20 Merits of a Good Machine :

  1. Proper and proportionate utilization of constituent elements.
  2. Well-knit construction
  3. Firmness of appearance
  4. Inscrutability 
  5. Functional efficiency  
  6. Lightness
  7. Freedom from noise
  8. A loud noise when noise intended
  9. Freedom from looseness
  10. Freedom from stiffness
  11. Smooth and unhampered motion
  12. Production of intended effects in case where ware is of curious category
  13. Securing rhythmic quality in motion
  14. Going into action when required
  15. Resumption of still state when not required
  16. Verisimilitude in case of bodies
  17. Firmness 
  18. Durability
  19. Softness
  20. Enduring capacity
