The 3 Classes : (Sushruta Samhita Vol.5.8)

I) Mild poisoned :-- 

  • Germinate from cow dung or ant other rotten substances.
  • 12 species.

II) Neither mild nor strong :-- 

  • Germinate from decomposed woods and decayed bricks.
  • 3 species.

III) Strong poisoned :-- 

  • Germinate from decomposed carcass  of snakes, from any other poisonous putrid organic matter.
  • 15 species
  • Further divided in 4 classes - 12-jointed, 3-jointed, 2-jointed and jointless.

Physical Characteristics : (Jain text Ratnasarabhaga, Pg #150)

They have a body length of 1 yojana (12-15 km) and a lifespan of 6 months.

  • Phylum - Arthropoda
  • Subphylum - Chelicerata
  • Class - Arachnida
  • Order - Scorpiones
  • Size range - 0.3"-9"
  • Largest size on record - 11.5" Giant Forest Scorpion
  • Of the 1,750 known species till now, 25 are venomous.
  • Total 13 families that group these all species.
  • Scorpions glow vibrant blue-green when exposed to UV light.

# Scorpions stand as a symbol of death, rebirth, evil, magic, sunset and revenge.
