Surya is a Sanskrit word that means the Sun. Surya also connotes the solar deity in Hinduism, also known as Surya-narayan. Surya is one of the 5 deities considered as equivalent aspects and means to realizing Brahman in the Smarta Tradition.
Surya's iconography is often depicted riding a chariot harnessed by horses, often 7 in number which represent the 7 colours of visible light, and 7 days in a week.
Surya as a deity is also found in the arts and literature of Buddhism and Jainism.
He has 108 names in Hinduism.
