The 6 Generic Types : (by Mc Daniel)
- Folk-- Based on local traditions and cults of local deities.
- Vedic-- Practiced by traditionalist Brahmins.
- Vedantic-- Based on the philosophical approach of the Upanishads.
- Yogic
- Dharmic-- Based on Karma & upon social norms.
- Bhakti/ devotion-based.
# The 3 Hindu religions :--
1. Brahminic Sanskritic --
A polytheistic, ritualistic, priestly religion that centers on extended-family domestic & sacrificial rituals & appeals to a corpus of Vedic texts as an authority.
2. Folk religions & tribal religions
3. Founded religions--
Salvation religions with monastic communities, usually ascetic, often anti-Brahmic.
The 3 sub-groups :--
a) Sectarian religions
b) Syncretically founded religions
c) Founded, proselytizing religions, "Guruism"
# The 4 Forms of Religiosity :--
1. Ritualism--
Vedic-Brhamanistic domestic & sacrificial ritualism, but also some forms of Tantrism. The classical Karma-marga.
2. Spiritualism--
Intellectual religiosity, aimed at individual liberation, often under the guidance of a Guru. The classical Jnana-marga.
3. Devotionalism--
Mystical worship of a God.
4. Heroism--
A polytheistic form of religiosity rooted in militaristic traditions. Also called Virya-marga.
