The Tobacco Industry in India

India is the 2nd largest producer of tobacco, following China. The country has around 0.45-million hectare of land under tobacco cultivation. 
As per reports, production in 2024 was around 8.45-lakh mT.

Other Facts about the Tobacco Industry :

  • Types of tobacco produced are Flue-cured Virginia (FCV), bidi, hookah, chewing & snuff, cigar, cheroot, (natu, burley, lanka, HDBRG)
  • Tobacco is one of the most economically significant agricultural crops in India, contributing significantly to domestic revenue & global trade
  • India is the largest exporter of tobacco, with exports accounting for about 9% of global tobacco production
  • Tobacco is grown in about 15 states, with Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka being leading states in its cultivation
