The Timber Survey Manual: Region Five, California Region (1935), authored by Oscar M. Evans and published by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service stands as a pivotal document in the evolution of forest inventory and management practices in California. 

Developed under the auspices of the McSweeney-McNary Forest Research Act of 1928, this manual provided standardized methodologies for assessing timber resources across California's diverse forest landscapes.
