ANGELS & DEVAS/DEMI-GODS [Part-III]

Devas in Sanatan Dharma :

  • Daivik yuddham (divine battles) fought by divine weapons. They are uttam-type. [Shukra-niti]
  • The bows of gods are heavier and superior to those of humans, measuring 5-1/2 cubits. [Dhanur veda, 1744-45]
  • Devas conquered death by practicing Brahmacharya, as it is the supreme penance. [Atharva Veda 1.5.19]
  • They have no fixed abode and roam about in atmosphere in aerial chariot in planets and constellations. [Vayu Purana 39.29-31]
  • The Earth has same measurements as Swarga-loka. [Matsya Purana Ch.124]
Castes of Devas :-- [Brihadaryanka Upanishad 1.4.11-13]

a) Brahmin - Agni

b) Kshatriya - Indra, Varuna, Chandra, Rudra, Parjanya, Yama, Kala, Isana

c) Vaishya - Adityas, Marutas, Rudras, Vasus, Viswadevas

d) Shudra - Pushan

Caste of Nav-grahas :--

a) Brahmin - Jupiter, Venus

b) Kshatriya - Sun, Mars

c) Vaishyas - Moon, Mercury

d) Shudra - Shani

  • In the 84-lacs Yonis, 13 divisions are divine, 4 divisions are in Heaven, 14-lacs types.
  • When Mahishasura captured Deva-loka/ Swarga-loka, all Devas came to earth and resided as ordinary humans.  [Devi Mahatamya, 2.3-7]
  • Indra dev is chief of all devas.  [Gita 10.22]
  • Kartikeya is commander-in-chief of daivik army.  [Gita 10.24]
  • Hybrid human-gods participated in the Mahabharata war.
  • Hybrid human-Vanaras participated in the Ramayana war.
  • Every Deva also have their separate abode, consort, mount and weapon.
  • Amrit (divine nectar) is for Devas, ambrosia for the Nagas, rasayana for human sages. [Charak Samhita VI.1.78-80]
  • The middle category Sattvics are - Sacrificers, sages, gods, Vedas, luminaries, years, Pitras and sadhyas. [Manu Smriti 12.49]
  • The Devas and Pitras are appeased by clarified butter fed in fire of yajna. Devas, particularly, appeased on the full moon.  [Mbh Book I.VIII]
  • The word "deva" has 3 meanings - God, protector (guardian angel) and cosmic vibration. Lord Shiva brought the devas down to earth in the form of letters and so the Sanskrit letters are known as Devanagri (the citizens of God).  [Brihad Indrajaal (2015), page #48]
  • "Ram has seen Indra, with a radiant bodythat has coupled radiance of Sun and fire, mounted on a great chariot with green horses that does not touch he earth, wearing greatly brilliant ornaments and attained in spotless dress. He was attended by 2 female celestial and others like Gandharvas, Siddhas etc. Hundreds of devas around, those youthful ones with their ear-ornaments and swords in hands, wide and broad chests, with club-shaped arms and clad in glimmering red garments, wearing ornamental chains on chest akin to flaring fire and bear a look of 25 year old. For gods are immortal and they will be ever young."  [Ramayana book III. 5.5-18]
