ANGELS & DEVAS/DEMI-GODS [Part-II]

 Hello everyone !!!

Devas (Demi-gods) in Sanatan Dharma :

  • They are the 6th creation of Lord Brahma, as Urddhasrotas. They are full of pleasure and enjoyment, spiritual body, luminous within & without, upward current of nutrients and sattvic guna. [Vishnu Purana 4.5]
  • Limited lifespan, but longer than humans. They don't have old age and disease. [Devi BP 4.13.27-30]
  • They don't eat or drink, but can see, hear and smell. [Chandyo Upan 3.6.1]
  • Their sadhana requires purity, calm and self-restraint sadhaka; need of idol, mantra and yantra.
  • Cause insanity in humans by possessing them and aggravates Vata element in body. [Charak samhita VI.9.20-21]
  • The 33 Devas -- 11 (sky-region), 11 (earth-region), 11 (water-region) [RV 1.139.11; Mbh 1.60.36; AV 9.1.123; YV 5.4.5.4.1; RV 1.2.XLV]
  • The 33 Devas (list-2) -- 12 Adityas, 11 Rudras, 8 Vasu, 2 Ashvini Kumaras.
  • The 3 cardinal virtues -- Temperance (devas), charity (human), compassion (asuras) [BU 16.1-3]
  • They procreate by sight, touch, speech and mating.
The Qualities of Devas as per Bhagvad Gita (16.1-3)

Fearlessness, pure heart, absorbed in spiritual knowledge, charity, self-control,sacrifice, study of Vedas, austerity, sincerity, non-violence, truthfulness, no anger, renunciation, serenity, no fault finding, compassion for all, no avarice, gentle, modest, steady, valor, forgiveness, cleanliness, no envy, no desire of prestige.

  • Abode - Swargaloka, its capital is Amaravati puri.
  • The humans with Sattva, worship the devas. [Gita 17.4]
  • 1 day of Devas = 1 year of humans.
  • When their merit ceases, have to take birth as mortal humans, gain merit with their karma (good actions) and attain their status back.  [Mbh Shanti Parva CCLVIII]
  • The 8 classes of Devas  [Bhagvatam SB 3.10.28-29]
  • Born from Kashyapa rishi and Aditi devi.
  • Duty of Devas -- In charge of various necessities of life, being satisfied by performance of yajna they supply all necessities to humans.
  • The weapons used by them -- Bow & arrows, sword, spear, dart, chakra, club, mace, war hammer, Astras, mayavi shakti (illusion)  [SB 8.10.35-36]
