The Principles of Silat

Hii Everyone !!!

Silat is an Indonesian martial arts. It is based on certain principles which we will discuss below.

1. Combat Principles :--

a) All Combat is Relational--
You can't effectively "defend" yourself if you do not understand the relationship between yourself and the attacker. Every time the attacker moves or you move, the most appropriate angles and opportunities for counters change. Recognize that and adapt accordingly. Understand the techniques and be adaptable enough to change a failing technique mid-stream.

b) Use Everything--
Do not focus on the hands, feet or the body alone. Use it all, varying the attacks and tools used.
This makes it difficult for an attacker to build a defense once a successful attack has begun.
Also, using the same attack over and over allows an attacker to make strategy and counter.
Use the environment, found weapons and generally sneaky or confusing tactics.

c) Reaction Bad, Action Good--
The positive to having good reactions is the ability to defend yourself when surprised.
Work in offensive mode and steal back the timing as quickly as possible.
Train to Act, not React !!!

d) Don't fight, win !!--
When in combat, seek to find a way around the fight. Use angles from every direction to enter in and defeat an opponent.

e) Use all Ranges and Heights

2. Physical Principles :--

a) Structure Foundation--
The posture should be uncompromising. If you vary the way you move to accommodate the attacker, you invariably work outside of your skill set. In addition, when you begin to alter your own posture, you also enter territory that is uncharted by your training. Trust the training and do not compromise the structure.

b) Master the Range--
Master the range, learn how to control it and how it controls you. Know the best time and place to use the tools in the arsenal. Know how to use them with the greatest impact.
Know how to switch from short to long and everywhere in-between when getting close or staying away is not a good idea.

c) 80% is Enough--
Work at 80-90% of your power to effectively issue energy. Maintain posture, structure and mindset of Action vs Reaction and use all the tools you have, including your mind.
Keep control of your mind, Spirit and intention.

d) Strike... then follow it like a Train!! --
It is better to hit with some power, even if not all of the power, then it is to miss. However, once hit, continue applying further attacks.
Additionally, prepare your follow-up attacks.

e) Timing--
Timing is absolutely more critical than speed. A sub-particle to timing is learning to "read" an opponent. Look for signs of opportunity such as telegraphing, lack of balance, structure or intention.
Even learn to create these opportunities through distracting activities.

f) Gravity--
Gravity is a great source of power. Use it as a source for hitting power, entry power, kicking power and even speed. Don't waste energy trying to defy gravity as much as control it whenever possible.
