Know about Kayasthas [Part-1]

Kayastha denotes a cluster of disparate South Asian communities broadly categorised by the regions of the Indian subcontinent in which they were traditionally located—the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas of North India, the Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhus of Maharashtra and the Bengali Kayasthas of Bengal. All 3 were traditionally considered "writing castes", who had historically served the ruling powers as administrators, ministers and record-keepers.

Other Important Facts :

  • According to the Puranas, they are descended from Lord Chitragupta, manas-putra (mind born son) of Lord Brahma and the deity responsible for recording all the deeds of humans, upholding rule of law and judgement. They are considered a Vansha.
  • According to Brahminical religious texts, they are a caste of scribes recruited in the beginning from Brahmins, Kshatriya and Vaishya castes, but eventually formed a distinct sub-caste in Northern and Western India. 
  • In modern India, they are considered a Forward caste and accorded a dual caste of Brahmin-Kshatriya.
  • The 12 sub-castes :--

Ambastha, Asthana, Balmik, Bhatnagar, Gaur, Karan, Kulshrestha, Mathur, Nigam, Saxena, Srivastava, Surajdhwaj.

  • Apart from these 12, 1 more sub-caste exists Chandraseniya Kayastha.
  • Srivastavas further divided in 65 Al (sub-groups).
  • They follow sects of Vaishnavism and Shaktism.
  • Kayasthas are one of the 31 main sub-divisions of Brahmins.
  • One of the 50 Brahmin communities of in India.
  • Another group of Kayasthas exists who converted to Islam, during the Mughal period. They settled in North India.
  • Origin of Kayasthas mentioned in Padma Purana.
  • Kayasthas ruled Ayodhya, before the Raghuvanshi dynasty. 
  • The community is 2nd in India, 5th in Asia and 11th in the world.

Lord Chitragupta :

  • Chitragupta is the 17th son of Lord Brahma.
  • The 4 virtues followed are - Justice, peace, literacy and knowledge.
  • He is assigned with the task of keeping complete records of the Karma of all beings in 84-lakh Yonis in 3 worlds. 
  • He carries in his hands pen, ink pot and sword.
  • Consorts - Dakshina, Nandini, Erawati, Shobhawati.

Kayastha Varna :

  • Vansha - Brahma-vanshi
  • Clan - Chiatra-Kshatriya
  • Kula - Dev/ Deva-putra
  • Kula devas - Ma Durga, Shiva
  • Guru - Lord Surya
  • Mantra - Gayatri mantra
  • Veda - Yajur ved
  • Purana - Garuda Purana
  • Days - Thursday, Saturday
