How to Get Vairagya (Book excerpts by Swami Sivananda) [1938]

How to get Vairagya (Detachment) :

  • Remember, sensual pleasure is momentary, deceptive, illusion and imaginary.
  • A mustard of pleasure is mixed with a mountain of pain !!
  • Enjoyment makes the mind more restless after enjoyment through intense craving.
  • Sensual pleasure is the enemy of Brahma-jnana (divine knowledge)
  • Sensual pleasure is the cause for repeated birth and death.
  • Gross body s nothing but a mass of flesh, bone and all sorts of filth.
  • Place before the mind, the fruits of Self-realisation, detachment and wisdom, and the desire to attain salvation will dawn.

What Narayana Upanishad Says : 

In the beginning these 2 roads were laid for humans-- 

  • The road through Karma
  • The road through Sanyasa (renunciation of worldly desire)

The latter consists of the renunciation of the 3-fold desire of son, wealth and fame.

The 2 Varieties of Vairagya :

  1. Karana               (due to miseries)
  2. Viveka-purvaka (by wisdom)

The 4 Stages :

1. Yatamana :--

The attempt not to allow the mind to run into sensual grooves.

2. Vyatireka :--

The endeavoring to cut-off attachment to some objects remaining.

3. Ekendriya :--

The senses stand still and subdued, but the mind has either attraction or repulsion for objects. Mind is the only sense that functions independently.  

4. Vasirara :--

The senses as well as the mind gets free from likes and dislikes.

The 3 Kinds :

  1. Very intense
  2. Intense
  3. Dull

The 3 Kinds of Heat :

  1. Adyatmika     (internal)
  2. Adhidaivika   (heavenly)
  3. Adhibhautika (external)

Miseries of Mundane Existence :

  • Ignorance is the cause of misery
  • Nobody comes and goes
  • Fire of desires
  • The 3 kinds of heat
  • Uncertainty of life
  • On the whole, life is sorrow
  • Desire for name and fame
  • Worry and anxiety
  • Raga and dwesha (attraction and repulsion)

Women :

Lust is a potent force. Women should be adored as Mother Shakti. She is the creator, generator and nourisher of the Universe. She must be revered. In Sanatan Dharma, religion is being preserved and maintained only through the devotional element of woman.

Teachings of Sri Sankaracharya :

  • Shun-off the companies of the four-- the fool, mean-minded, wicked and sinful.
  • The greatest of all enemies are five-- lust/desire, anger, lying, greed and craving.
