The 8 Stages of Sanyaas (renunciation) :

1. Kutichaka
2. Bahudaka
3. Hamsa
4. Paramhansa
5. Turiyatita
6. Avadhuta
7. Ek-danda (single stick)
8. Tri-danda (triple pole)

The 7 Types of Renunciations :

1. Vairagya :--
He enters the order being prompted by latent Samskaras, directly from first stage of life.

2. Jnana :--
He takes to the order due to his grasp on the import of scriptures and being convinced thereby of the existence of the spiritual ideas.

3. Jnana-vairagya :-- 
He enters the order after deep learning and also having seen the normal enjoyments of life.

4. Karma :--
He enters the order after having passes through the first 3 stages gradually.

5. Vividisha :--
He enters the order for acquiring spiritual knowledge.

6. Atura :--
He enters the order being  compelled by impending death.

7. Animitta :--
He enters the order with a feeling that there is nothing except God.

The 3 Gunas :

The 4 castes and 4 Ashramas (orders) are classifications based on the 3 Gunas :--
1. Sattva (equilibrium)
2. Rajas  (distraction)
3. Tamas (inertia)
