The Andon Concept of Japanese Manufacturing System

Hello Everyone !!

In manufacturing, Andon is a system which notifies managerial, maintenance, and other workers of a quality or process problem. It was first developed as part of the Toyota Production System (TPS) in the 1950s.

The alert can be activated manually by a worker using a pull-cord or button or may be activated automatically by the production equipment itself.

The system may include a means to pause production so the issue can be corrected.

It is a key principle in lean manufacturing and the Toyota Production System (TPS).

Benefits :

1. Improves Quality: Stops defective products from progressing down the line.

2. Empowers Workers: Encourages proactive problem-solving.

3. Reduces Downtime: Quickly addresses issues to minimize disruptions.

4. Supports Continuous Improvement: Logs issues for analysis and process enhancement.

The Andon system is a cornerstone of Jidoka, a TPS principle emphasizing automation with a human touch. It's a brilliant example of how simple tools can drive efficiency and teamwork !
