Sin (Hinduism)

Sin is the most dominant theme of every religion and religious philosophy. 

In Hinduism, sin is a formation or a consequence of desire-ridden actions, evil nature, karma, Maya and dereliction of Dharma. The idea of sin forms the basis of Hindu ethics and morality. 

Its purpose is to facilitate the order and regularity of the world, enforcement of Dharma and the evolution of beings through a corrective and punitive process. Sin may arise from both intentional and unintentional actions and through negligence and ignorance.

Classification of Sin 

Division-I

  1. Results in loss of caste (Pataniya)
  2. Taints the soul, yet allows to be a part of the caste (Asuchikara)


Division-II :

1. Mortal sins :--  (Maha-patakas)

    a) Having relation with Guru's wife

    b) Drinking alcohol

    c) Killing a learned Brahmin

    d) Stealing from a Brahmin

    e) Associating with an outcaste/ cheating

2. Minor sins :-- (Upa-patakas)

    a) Abandoning the Vedic fires

    b) Atheism

    c) Earning a livelihood through atheists

    d) The selling of Soma

3. Committed by ordinary sinners (Enasvins)

 

Division-III :

The 5 branches of unrighteousness :-- (SB 7.15.12-14)

1. Vidharma-- An objection to Dharma/ righteousness

2. Paradharma-- The encouragement to engage in duties strange to one's own

3. Upadharma-- The way of a pretender of dutifulness, a hypocrite.

4. Chala-- Feigning the duty with word jugglery 

5. Abhasa-- Sins done obstinately in defiance of the spiritual department.
